The Americorps VISTA (Volunteers in Service to America) program is a national service organization that places individuals with non-profit organizations to mobilize community resources and strengthen the capacity of the community.  It is a full-time, year-long program for men and women age 18 and older.  During this year of service, Americorps VISTA members may not have other jobs or enroll in college 

The Sikh Coalition, a sub-site of New York Disaster Interfaith Services (NYDIS)’s VISTA program, is seeking a VISTA member to provide capacity building support. The VISTA member will serve for one year at the Sikh Coalition office located in Manhattan.  The VISTA member will work to assist us with our mission to combat bias and discrimination (especially in the wake of public disasters) by working towards the development of the permanent infrastructure of the Sikh Coalition.  For a detailed list of responsibilities and qualifications, please read below:

 

Duties include:

  • Research and identify new foundation and corporate prospects
  • Write and submit grant applications
  • Build an individual-giving campaign
  • Coordinate special event planning
  • Organize and gather materials for solicitations
  • Maintain and develop new marketing materials for the Coalition

Qualifications include:

  • Proactive “self-starter” who can develop and implement projects without supervision
  • Experience or career oriented to development, communications, marketing desirable
  • Knowledge of the Sikh/and or South Asian community, or a desire to learn about a new minority community, a plus
  • Undergraduate degree or equivalent professional experience preferred
  • Exceptional oral and written communications skills
  • A “details” person with good organizational skills
  • Experience with Microsoft Word, Excel, Powerpoint, Outlook required – HTML experience a plus
  • Team-player with the ability to work collaboratively with a small staff required

VISTA members will receive an $11,388 annual living allowance, relocation allowance, health care benefits, life insurance, student loan deferment, free monthly NYC transportation card, childcare subsidies, and training opportunities. Members completing service qualify for a $4,725 education award or a $1,200 cash stipend.
