dotAn Ideal Approach to a Hate Crime Matter: Rajinder Singh Khalsa

Of all the over 40 hate crime cases where the Sikh Coalition has provided assistance to Sikhs in need, the Rajinder Singh Khalsa case remains the ideal way of approaching a hate crime case.

Not only were Rajinder Singh’s attackers were arrested and prosecuted, but they were also sentenced to perform community service with the Sikh Coalition.  In addition, New York state awarded Khalsa compensation for his medical expenses and Khalsa filed his own civil suit against his attackers for lost work time and other lost expenses as a result of the attack.   

What follows is a timeline of events in the Rajinder Singh Khalsa case:

7/11/2004
Khalsa beaten by five men yelling “get out of this county.

7/12/2004
Khalsa release from hospital.  Police state they believe hate crime did not occur and only 1 of 5 of the attackers would be prosecuted.

7/13/04
Sikhs rally in from of 102nd police precinct to protest lack of prosecution of 5 attackers

7/14/04
Coalition meets with Queens District Attorney and Bias Crimes Bureau to request all 5 attackers are prosecuted

7/15/04
Coalition participates in Anti-Hate Crime press conference at Queens Borough Hall

7/16/04
Coalition meets with Mayor Michael Bloomberg’s staff to discuss case

8/9/04
All 5 attackers indicted on hate crime charges by Queens District Attorney.

10/26/04
New York State Crime Victims Board finds Khalsa eligible for a $4999 reimbursement of the medical expenses associated with the attack on him

6/16/05
Coalition assists Khalsa with filing for additional compensation of his medical expenses

7/12/05
Coalition and Legal Access Network for South Asians assists Khalsa in finding an attorney to represent him in a civil suit against all 5 of his attackers for lost medical and other expenses

10/17/05
New York State Crime Victims Board recommends that the additional medical expenses be reimbursed for Khalsa

10/23/05
Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher and Flom agrees to represent Khalsa in defamation suit against him at request of Legal Access Network for South Asians

12/22/05
5 attackers against Khalsa are given jail time for attacking Khalsa and 3 of the attackers must perform a total of 350 hours of community service with the Coalition.

8/11/06

The first of Rajinder Singh’ attackers begins community service with the Sikh Coalition.
